I am not sure I did understand what is really happening from reading
your message.

Of course it could be everywhere. I don't know how long you have had
access to the Internet, but I think more or less as far back as I can
remember (and that is many, many years), Aminet has always been the
place to find Amiga software.

Then all of a sudden most software authors had to make their own
support homepages, and for some reason they decided that the software
only should be available from here. Why?

I wanted to install StrICQ recently. On Aminet I found 0.1371 which
was a quite old archive. I looked in the documentation and found the
support URL: http://www.owlnet.net/amiga/stricq/ -- nothing wrong so
far, except the homepage didn't exist. I then decided that the
development (and support) of StrICQ had been discontinued.

Actually somebody else had taken over the development. How was I to
know that? One of my friend supplied me with an URL for the new site
so I could download the newest release.

It makes it difficult for the users to find the software they need.

When I wanted to upgrade to a true news reader it was only by
chance that I found NewsRog -- the world greatest news reader -- because
it wasn't listed on Aminet. It would have been so much easier if all
the news readers had had a presence on Aminet so I didn't have to ask
everybody about news readers to learn what were available and where to
find them.

But of course support sites has their place too. The alphas that
Olli & Co. has been releasing recently have certainly no place on
Aminet. Similarly a place for making registrations are needed. Actually
the sites are probably just fine as the are -- they should simply once
in a while upload an archive to Aminet.
