As Preston said the watershed above the dam is closed to sport and
commercial fishing, but a friend of mine has a research permit for
scientific needs. :-)
As to fishing from below the dam there is good fishing water, yes, a
more or less natural stream above Auburn/Hwy 18. The flume below this is
due to ancient levees and the lack of the White River entering the Green
at Auburn. Prior to about 1915 it flowed out the Green, and since flows
out the Stuck River.
Probably the nicest locations are from the State Park Bridge downstream
through Metzler-O'Grady Park. And don't just fish the upper section of
M-O'G, go downstream, the bottom side of the bend is even nicer. It is
also quite nice above the State Park through the canyon on up to
Palmer-Kanasket SP. I have only fished to K-P, and not above that. But
really the only accesses through the canyon are from the top and bottom
if you don't have a boat. And the canyon is whitewater, so be prepared,
and not naively enter this reach without knowing how to handle
significant rapids.
