I wouldn't get caught in a watershed fishing. Game Dept could care less; it
is a trespassing violation and they are much worse than a game violation.
You can see some very beautiful scenery by accessing the canyon. It is not
for boaters. I don't think National Geographic could make it down. Years
back, Andre L.(L. for lack of being able to spell his last name) of Lavro
boat fame, launched one of his indestructible, bullet proof driftboats, at
the head of the canyon, the same boat that he would turn on its side at the
sport shows and blast with a sledge hammer; it never made it part way down
and ended up in dozens of pieces...this upper canyon is not navigable by
anyone, innertubers included! If you like wild lookin water in wilderness
looking country, than access the canyon off of the upper road described in
the previous post. I turned right down a dirt road rather than going into
the hatchery and then the first left and that put me on a trail below the
hatchery. This is beautiful country with the sun first coming up in the
morning. I've seen schools of steelhead in the big, horseshoe bend,
standing on the bluff high above the river, just down below the hatchery.
You can also park, and walk the river up to the headworks. Smaller rainbows
are probably your opportunity at catching something, but your not there for
big fish. If you also, want to see WILD people, stay on the main road down
to the Roy Tavern!....scary. Jere (Oh, you can also access the canyon from
a road out of Black Diamond. There are several trails that drop down of the
high canyon wall down to the river)
