Fished the Stillly tonight just down river from Fortson Pond from 6:15 until
8:15.
Several small fish - less than 8 inches interested in any dry fly. A few,
between 8 and 10 inches took elk hair caddis - size 14 or 16. I had one
really strong hit at the head of the run but I had gotten careless after so
many small fish and it snapped me off immediately.
I did manage to land one rainbow (or cut; I read that they don't always have
the characteristic slash) over 14 inches and very healthy. I know this
because I was so impressed with the story of the Yakima guide that I measured
my arm, from middle finger to elbow (19 inches, if you must know) and I
marked the length of this fish for verification later. In any case, pleanty
of action for 2 hours.
I did see one very large fish (I mean Large) leave the water just downstream.
Salmon or Steelhead, I don't know, but it was quite a show.
There were small insects swarming for short periods of time between 7 and 8.
Not sure what they were. Also saw something light, about size 14 coming off
the water, but, again, I can't name them.
