WDFW taking public comment on 2002 sport fishing rules package
OLYMPIA- The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is accepting public comment on a proposed package of sport fishing rules for the 2002-03 fishing season.
The proposed rules, governing the recreational harvest of game fish, food fish and shellfish, will the focus of a public hearing before the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission during the commission's December 7 and 8 meeting at the Best Inn and Suites, 221 NE Chkalov St., in Vancouver. The commission is scheduled to vote on adoption or modification of the rules package at its February meeting.
The complete rules package may be viewed and downloaded from the WDFW website at http://www.wa.gov/wdfw/fish/regs/2002prop.htm on the Internet. Printed copies of the proposed rules also may be obtained by contacting the WDFW Fish Program at (360) 902-2700.
Among changes in the new rules package are proposals to:
* Eliminate exceptions to wild steelhead release rules or, alternately, to standardize bag limits to one wild steelhead (10 per year) in areas where exceptions to wild steelhead release rules are allowed
* Create new underwater marine protected areas to protect or enhance fish species at Rosario Head, Zees Reef near Fox Island, and Fort Casey State Park, Scatchet Head and Admiralty Head on Whidbey Island.
* Allow anglers to use two poles in freshwater with the purchase of a second freshwater fishing license
