I once read, but forget who wrote it, that a sparse dress fly on a light wire hook would have a faster sink rate than a larger hook fully dressed.  It makes sense to me- less water resistance.  I guess I'll have to research my books again...

One little trick I figured out, especially with big marabou patterns...  if you tie a shoulder (ball) to help build a bigger profile, place a metal/tungsten bead in the center and dub around it.   Sinks like a rock!   Another option... metal body tube flies.  This will put you right above the rocks.   One of my main reasons for using a lot of tube flies.  Hope this helps.
