Basically Apple had to make some changes to Mac OS X for Retrospect to be able to get the right information to be able to do its thing. That's done now, and Dantz is working on getting Retrospect 5 finished.

How do traditional Unix's (Unices?) handle backups?

With traditional, complicated and sometimes expensive software.
