No, the XP box has 2 Ethernet cards one of which plugs directly into the
ADSL modem (Alcatel Speedtouch). I would plug the Mac in directly to test
but it means installing and configuring PPPoE which will probably take some
time seeing as I don't have the software.

The Mac can read mail from a Bigpond account and from my account at Perth
iX. It can connect to the main account, authenticate, get the message list
(Outlook Express says "7 messages to download") and read the size of the 1st
message to download (0 of 342 kbytes in the progress window) but it stalls
at that point.

It also reads some web sites but not others.Eg www.cisco.com, no problem,
www.yahoo.com.au times out.

If it didn't work at all I'd have something to go on but this situation
where some work and some don't has me trying to figure out what is different
between them.

Also, the XP box can get to the web sites and download the mail. Weird!!!
