Kevin,
My instructions also apply if your iMac is doing the routing (ie
running pppOE). It sounds like your DSL-300 does not have routing
functions, which probably means that the eMac which is giving you the
prompt is doing the PPpOE stuff. I'm making alot of assumptions here as
you still haven't provided enough detail on exactly how you're
connected (I am assuming that prompt is a Mac OSX prompt)
On the eMac which is giving you the connection prompt,
go to >system preferences> network>built in ethernet>pppOE
If you're doing what I think you're doing, you will have this panel
filled and "connect using PPPoE" checked.
Click "pppOE options" in this panel.
Uncheck all the "session options" in the dialog that pops up (or
configure accordingly, this panel is self explanatory)
Click "OK" and close up system prefs.
If this doesn't work, you might have a different location active in the
network control panel( or maybe the other emac is routing?) and you
will need to follow these instructions for that location.
If this still doesn't work, we'll need more detail to help you out any
further.
Alternatively, you might just want to go out and buy a billion 5102
ADSL modem/router for $99 and save you all this hassle. It's got a
4-port router built in.

Thank you for your reply.

Kevin,
As others have mentioned, we need to know how you're connecting to
the internet - if you are connecting via ADSL, John's point might
be appropriate.
The eMac in question is linked through a 5 port switch to another
eMac connected to the net by an ethernet DSL-300 modem. The main
eMac doesn't have a connection prompt, but the linked one does get
the prompt. It is not a great problem, but one I could do
without.
Why isn't the DSL-300 modem connected straight to the 5-port switch,
and then the 'another' e-mac also connected to the switch? In fact
I'm not sure how you can have the eMac connected to the DSL-300
modem and the switch as AFAIK the eMac has only got one ethernet
port.
Thanks,
Shay
Sorry,
Obviously I have described the setup incorrectly...you are correct
Shay. Still leaves the prompt problem.
