Hi Philippe,

Can you clarify a couple of things for me please?

1.Can you Send OK in Mail App. from your dot mac email account?
If you can that means your Port 25 is ok, it's not blocked.

2. Can you Receive mail in Mail App. from your dot mac email address?
You receive mail from dot mac through Port 143 .... and this seems to be where your problem is.

3. Silly question I know ... but you have setup 'Mail forwarding' from mac.com to your [EMAIL PROTECTED] email account ?

If all the above are 'Yes' .... then something is blocking Port 143 'Incoming' traffic. A) Have you installed anything at around the time that this problem started that could be blocking Port 143?
     Little Snitch or something similar?
B) Can you access your ADSL Modem & see if there is a setting 'Incoming Port Range'
and see if the range includes Port 143?

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Ronni,

Many thanks for the information below. I have meticulously followed your instructions, but somehow there is something blocking Port 143. This is the
error message I got from MAIL:

'The Server Cannot be contacted on port 143'.

I had turned off the OS firewall, although previously I had no problem with
OS X Firewall being active. Must add that I had always used Safari to
retrieve my mail at .mac.

So now, Safari, Firefox, Mail and even my old copy of IE are encountering the same problem of 'Cannot find server'. This would indicate that some
setting on my machine has been changed somehow. But which one?

I have a 'spare' account on OS X, logged on that name but still get the same
negative result. Puzzling however still searching.

By the way, I was at my brother's place and was able to open my .mac account
without the slightest hiccup!! Now, that's frustrating ....

Regards,

Philippe the frustrated ....

PPS I just heard from Westnet who are having no problem with
accessing the
.mac site. As far as they know, other customers of theirs having
a .mac
account are encoutering no problem at all. So its something here on my
machine or possibly modem which may be the cause. Will keep looking.

Hi Philippe,

Check you Mail settings for your .mac account.

Mail > Preferences > Accounts: - .Mac Under 'Account Information'
Incoming Mail Server: mail.mac.com
Outgoing Mail Server SMTP) - mail.westnet.com.au

Server Settings: mail.westnet.com.au
Server Port: 25
NO TICK in 'Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)

Under 'Advanced'
Port 143
Authentication: Password
