It was explained to me by an Electronics Engineer who used to work
for the Federal Government that the satellites used for GPS are
interfered with constantly by the US military.
This is so that they cannot be used with any accuracy by anyone on
the "dark side" for evil purposes.
Consequently the signal is interrupted in such a way as to move the
location around every few seconds perhaps 100 metres in any
direction. In fact when Iraq was invaded by the US forces, the signal
was completely screwed on purpose.
This could explain why you were apparently in fields parallel to the
highway.
I am told that people have been known to turn into the street before
or after the correct one for the same reason.
Makes you wonder if the expense of a GPS is really worth it ........
eh ??

I have te TomTom One XL. I would have no trouble recommending it. I
have used it all over Perth and also in Albany (it did some strange
things on the way there, like showing my pos as in the middle of
fields parallel to Albany Hwy).
The bluetooth in this one does not interface with a mobile for
calls. I had difficulty setting it up with my laptop and am just
using the USB connection instead.

Subject: Car GPS/SatNav
Hi WAMUGers
I¹ve been speaking to Santa about a car GPS.
I have checked a thread that was on the list a while ago, spoken
with the
very knowledgeable Daniel K and Reg W.
Here¹s the summary:
Don¹t really need all the bells and whistles. And Tomtom is the way
to go.
However beware, it seems if you are thinking of purchasing an
updated map
each year they will slug you $150!
It seems a good basic model is the Tomtom One or the Tomtom One XL
which
adds bluetooth and a wider 4.3 inch screen.
Battery said to last 2 hours.
Tomtom website/download area is mac friendly.
I guess ³portable² means you can use it out of your car?
Do you think the bluetooth will work with the iPhone?
Are they of any use in country driving? Ie can use set it to take
you to the
Billabong Roadhouse or Denham or Pemberton or 80 Mile Beach?
A real GPS that you can plot waypoints, leave ³breadcrumb² trails
etc seems
to be a lot more expensive and maybe less mac friendly.
Please any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Rod
