All,

I have an HP iPaq Travel companion with full PDA functions and Tom Tom
loaded. I also run OziExplorer mapping software where I load topographic
maps. It is not a turn by turn programme. I also have a hand held GPS.

Tom Tom is great for in car use. I think the HP battery life would not be so
good for walking around a city. Others say a dedicated tom tom device is
better on batteries.

You can load all sorts of extra POI, Points of interest, you can download
from http://www.gps-data-team.info/

Seeing this is a Mac group, I'd better make mention of Mac compatibility.
TomTom Home works okay to download extra voices - I paid $10 to have John
Cleese direct me around the place. I think Tom Tom Home works much better
with my PC than it does with the Mac as far as connecting and syncing goes.
I needed MarkSpace Missing Sync for Windows Mobile to get the HP iPaq to
talk to the Mac. Syncing is a bit troublesome without extra software.

You want to go to Denham? It's 828km from my place and Tom Tom estimates I
will take 10:07 hours to get there. Yep, great for country trips. I even
found it had more roads marked than my 250k topographic maps I use in
OzeExplorer when I was wending my way through the forests!

GPS need a clear view of the sky, don't work so well under trees, or fast
driving along heavily treed forest highways. But if you want directions not
an autopilot, they're terrific.

If you want to leave breadcrumbs, I'm afraid you'll need a bakery. TomTom
won't do it. You can't record routes, adjust maps, backtrack etc. To record
routes and make a backtrack, you'll need a proper handheld GPS device - or
maybe some top end Tom Tom. There are heaps of options coming for these
things.
