Hi All

Just thought I'd post the following, which may be of use to Entourage users.
After a very long day fixing an Entourage Database corruption, there's some
interesting (and scary) info.

If you're using Entourage, you may think all is going well when suddenly it
just falls over for no apparent reason, and you run the risk of a massively
long job to fix it. Or worse, lose everything.
(After today's job we had a successful outcome and salvaged everything bar
two corrupt emails. Yay for backups and patience). :o)

Entourage can keep corrupt emails and slowly the database it uses gets worse
and worse until it falls over.

How can you fix it? Or keep an eye on it?
The following link has a lot of information, which may be of help to some
people.

e.html>

But the "quick" check is the following:-
In Entourage go to the File Menu and choose "Export..."
In the screen that pops you'll want to Export for "Items to an Entourage
archive". (And have "All items" selected, which should then have "Mail,
Local Contacts, Local Calendar Events, Tasks and Notes" ticked.)
Click the Next Arrow in the bottom of that Window.
On the next screen, You Have "Delete Archived Items?". You want this to be
"No, keep the items in Entourage after they are archived". (This is VERY
important, to not choose the wrong one, otherwise it will delete everything
out of Entourage).
Click the Next Arrow in the bottom of that Window.
You'll then be asked to "Save As" and "Where" to save it. I normally just
save it to the Desktop.

What should happen is it will go through and save everything into an .rge
archive file (for Entourage 2008). If it saves fine, then "generally" your
Database should be fine with no corruption.
If however it completes with an error,..then that's when you need to start
looking at it more. (As per the above link).

And unfortunately as Entourage keeps everything into one (very) large
Database file,..this is where it starts to get messy and worrying.
You can be using it, thinking everything is fine,..and it just goes down
hill from there.

(We may see this fixed in Office 2011 due out next month, when they change
to Outlook and the way it manages how it saves. But still, something to be
wary of. Especially if it doesn't change or get fixed.)

As always,...ensure to keep good backs up. But this is a good check to do
once a month or so, to ensure that your Database is 'ok'.

Sorry for the long post, but just thought I'd mention it so people were
aware. A "small" job to try and correct a database issue today, turned into
a very long fix unfortunately. We got it working, but it was a bit of an eye
opener! ;o)

Hope that may help some people.

Kind Regards
Daniel
