Hi Alan,

Your Apple ID is an email address and a password that will allow you to log
into iTunes, or MobileMe, or set up home sharing on an Apple TV. So in that
respect it is the same thing as an iTunes ID. Once you have an Apple ID there
is no requirement to get a second Apple ID, nor any advantage. Yes you can
cancel / close an Apple ID -- I am not sure of the distinction you are making
between the two words.

From memory, you should be able to pair your Apple TV with iTunes without
setting up home sharing. If you have an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, the Apple
Remote application makes entry of set-up data to Apple TV a lot easier as you
get the use of a full keyboard rather than the TV screen sequential letter
selector.

It might be an idea to verify and get one Apple ID working -- test it on your
Mac and verify it -- and then use this ID to set up your Apple TV. If you enter
the account name and the password correctly, it should work. Your Apple TV also
needs access to your home network, so you must also correctly enter your
wireless network name and password and the type of wireless security you are
using (usually WPA2).

Take a break, drink a cup of tea and have another go. :-)

Good luck!
Carlo
