Thanks Carlo and Ronni

Still no joy, unfortunately. The problem seems to be with iTunes and the two
IDs. The Apple TV goes through the proper steps until it tries to sign in to
iTunes.

I think Home Sharing is now set on both iMac and ATV. I think this is needed
to access data on the iMac iTunes application. After activating HS on ATV it
attempts to connect to the iTunes Store but cannot sign in to the server.
Error message prompts me to send verification email – which Apple site won’t
accept because address has already been verified with another ID!

I will try changing the email address of the stuck ID in the morning by going
through the “Forgotten ID” process again unless you can give me some other
pearls of wisdom.

Ronni: I’d already gone through the steps to find my Apple ID (without your
guide) and followed up by checking details under “Managing my account”. This
requested I check a “send verification email” box which I did. I shortly got
an email to verify the contact address. I clicked the link and all seemed
well. However this Apple ID was not recognized by iTunes (for setting Home
Sharing) and I was led into creating another ID for iTunes with its own
verification email and the subsequent problems.

After trying some of Carlo’s ideas I received your email and then did the steps
you gave. This time Apple system showed TWO IDs to the one email address (not
unexpected) and asked me to check one and follow up with a mandatory password
change. One ID displayed as my straight email address and the other appeared
to be longer but truncated, so I couldn’t read the actual name (email address)
recorded. I followed up the legible ID and completed required details. I
checked the “managing account” box and it noted that a verification email had
been sent. All other personal details appeared to be correct.

However I still cannot log into the iTunes store from the IMac. (ATV can’t log
in either.) I get info message that an email has been sent to (my address)
with a link to verify the Apple ID: Part 2 of same window says email address
is already verified for another Apple ID. The only option is to click “Done”
which takes me back to iTunes but not logged in.

A few (wild midnight) thoughts:

    (1) I seems to recall a similar issue some months back when someone on
WAMUG had problems with 2 separate accounts linked to one email address –
perhaps this is similar.

    (2) All this ID and iTunes editing seems to occur on the US web site, not
the Australian site. Will I end with a US iTunes account?

    (3) I did not restart or power down the iMac with any of these episodes
(or – sorry, can’t help it – repair permissions!).

    (4) I could re-use the Forgotten ID procedure and try to change the
strange (long) ID to a gmail address and hope it untangles from my real iiNet
address.

Carlo: I had a meal, a strong coffee and a handful of chocolate almonds. Then
squeasily returned to reading help archives and trying things.

My original Apple ID was set up to access Knowledge Base a year ago. The
associated confirming email stated this would aid Apple Store purchases and new
product registration. Access to iTunes was not mentioned, although I had to
give credit card details at the time. I assumed that perhaps iTunes needed
a separate ID so I charged ahead and created it with full email address and new
password – and new credit card details.

I was unhappy that ATV requested Home Sharing as all my local iTune files are
home-made creations. Home Sharing seems to be associated with stopping iTunes
store copy infringements. But the Apple salesman and the ATV install guide say
Home Sharing must be done. I can’t see my iTune content on ATV so I assume
this will display after HS is enabled. Still worried that ATV needs to sign
into the iTunes store before it gives me access to my iMac iTunes files.

BTW I tried to distinguish between just flagging an account as not in use, and
completely removing all records from a database (recent Facebook and Victorian
footballer issue!) And the little ATV remote is easier to use than the
reviews suggested, though an iPhone qwerty board would be better.

Cheers, Alan

Hi Alan,

How to find your Apple ID

1.Visit the Apple ID homepage.

<https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa>

On the bottom of the page, you'll see "Not Sure If You Have an Apple ID?" Click
"Find Out." You'll be directed to a page with the title "Find Your Apple ID."

2.Input your first and last name, and then input your email address. Type any
additional email addresses you may have previously used with your iTunes
account in the "Previous Email" box.

3.Click "Next." This screen will let you know if Apple was able to connect your
information with an Apple iTunes account.

4.Choose your verification method. Select "Email Authentication" or "Answer
Security Questions." Click "Next."

5.Answer the security questions or check your email to retrieve your Apple ID
and reset your password if necessary.

Hi Alan,

Your Apple ID is an email address and a password that will allow you to log
into iTunes, or MobileMe, or set up home sharing on an Apple TV. So in that
respect it is the same thing as an iTunes ID. Once you have an Apple ID there
is no requirement to get a second Apple ID, nor any advantage. Yes you can
cancel / close an Apple ID -- I am not sure of the distinction you are making
between the two words.

It might be an idea to verify and get one Apple ID working -- test it on your
Mac and verify it -- and then use this ID to set up your Apple TV. If you enter
the account name and the password correctly, it should work. Your Apple TV also
needs access to your home network, so you must also correctly enter your
wireless network name and password and the type of wireless security you are
using (usually WPA2).

Take a break, drink a cup of tea and have another go. :-)

Good luck!

Carlo

Hi

I’m caught in an endless loop with verification of my Apple ID or perhaps the
iTunes ID. Frustration level and inability to think clearly are also rapidly
increasing with each loop! Any suggestions to resolve the issue?

Bought an Apple TV this afternoon and got to the iTunes Home Sharing step.
From my iMac I eventually got my Apple ID resolved (perhaps) with a new 6
character password after going through the Forgot ID and Password routine. (I
thought I knew my ID and P/W, but...) Responded to the Verify Email message
and that was accepted by Apple. Checked my details online OK. Back to Home
Sharing: iTunes would not accept the Apple ID user and password but forced me
to open a new account (complete email address) with an 8 character password.
Then iTunes sent me a Verify Email. This was NOT accepted as “email address is
already verified for another Apple ID”.

Is the Apple ID a different entity to the iTunes ID? Do I need to open a new
email account just to satisfy iTunes and ATV? It is possible I have an old
unused and forgotten iTunes account that is impacting on this. Can I cancel
(not just close) my iTunes account(s) and start again?

Regards, Alan
