Porsche cars ran a wonderful ad a few years ago to the effect that if you can't justify spending half a million dollars on buying a Porsche then you're not giving the problem your full attention. I think I'm in a somewhat similar bind. An iPad is looking very seductive to use as an Apple TV remote. I had been under gentle pressure from my family for years to make the jump from Microsoft to an Apple Mac. One reason for resistance was to avoid being locked into the Apple system. Well, the Apple family has its problems, but the terrific support from users (WAMUG is tops) makes it a very friendly and forgiving family. Anyway, why do I have to JUSTIFY the purchase of an iPad? Just some extra information for the record or for anyone else following this thread. I just, this minute, got back from installing an Apple TV for a friend. I thought that I would do the minimum possible so that I could report back to you what was absolutely necessary to get it displaying the contents of iTunes (songs and videos) on your TV. The surprising thing is that one can do all of the above by a single entry, and that was the password for the wireless router (in this case the router was a Time Capsule). Truly! After selecting the wireless router from a list and entering the password I was good to go. To test the setup I played a song in iTunes and selected the Apple TV from the Air Play list, and the song plays through the TV and the home theatre sound system. To select the Apple TV as you output device in iTunes there is a little up-arrow in the bottom right corner. You should get the latest version of iTunes as this feature is absent from some of the earlier versions. After a few minutes of use, the Apple TV prompted me to upgrade its firmware, and I accepted. The upgraded firmware also allows the streaming of videos via Air Play. Just for a tour-de-force, I played a song and a video off my iPhone to the Apple TV as well. :-) Note that at no stage was an Apple ID, or Home Sharing required. You have achieved a lot of bonus points that I did not aim for in my install. 1) Home Sharing means that if you have multiple family members, each with their own iTunes account, then whenever any member of the family purchases a song or a film, the song or film becomes available to all members of the family in each copy of iTunes connected to the home share. 2) By entering an Apple ID into your Apple TV, you have made it possible to purchase songs and rent movies directly from the Apple TV. Without entering this ID, you can still purchase the song or rent the movie on your Mac, and then stream them to the Apple TV via Air Play. So that's the long and the short of it Alan. You have the cadillac of installs and have achieved it by a sustained good effort. As an aside, I closed an iTunes account when I emigrated back to Australia from Canada. It required an email to Apple support. If you don't want to wrestle with the online interface and you live near Perth, an appointment with an Apple Genius will probably get you the same result. Enjoy your wonderful new toy. I think the Apple TV is a fantastic gadget. The latest rumours on AppleInsider say that the next software upgrade may include the beginnings of an App Store for Apple TV. They will start with games first. Rumour has it in any case. Everything proceeded normally from there. Other causes may have been the inability of Apple to resolve the email address verification process when two IDs have the same email address; and corruption of one username when I attempted to change it. I am most impressed with the Apple TV. It is connected via my home wireless network. I watched an 8 minute movie and listened to Beethovens' Moonlight Sonata. No buffering delays noticed. Both files were on iMac internal drive. Will try a full length movie when I get time to see if data transfer is a problem with a large file. I will also test access to movies on a daisy-chained Firewire external HD. Yes, I had to connect to the iTunes store during the ATV setup but no problem with then selecting NO to renting or buying movies on-line. I now want ATV version 3 to provide USB and Firewire inputs for direct portable hard drive and thumb drive input!
