Joy and jubilation!
Thanks Carlo and Ronni. I now have two working Apple IDs with different usernames and email addresses. I used one of the IDs to complete registration with iTunes Store, for iTunes Home Sharing, and for the Apple TV. I understand that I can cancel the “spare” Apple ID by phoning Apple Care (can’t be done on-line). I suspect that iTunes requires an 8 character password. My original Apple ID had a 6 character password. When I re-entered the (original) username with a new gmail.com address I used an 8 character password instead of the “at least 6” required by Apple. Everything proceeded normally from there. Other causes may have been the inability of Apple to resolve the email address verification process when two IDs have the same email address; and corruption of one username when I attempted to change it. I am most impressed with the Apple TV. It is connected via my home wireless network. I watched an 8 minute movie and listened to Beethovens’ Moonlight Sonata. No buffering delays noticed. Both files were on iMac internal drive. Will try a full length movie when I get time to see if data transfer is a problem with a large file. I will also test access to movies on a daisy-chained Firewire external HD. Yes, I had to connect to the iTunes store during the ATV setup but no problem with then selecting NO to renting or buying movies on-line. I now want ATV version 3 to provide USB and Firewire inputs for direct portable hard drive and thumb drive input!
