I’m still not sure what happened with your 10.10.1 Update :( Did the installation stall at the end ‘Restart' - and you never got to the Login Window & then Diagnostics & Usage Window? Was there just a “a small dark gray spinning gear” .... NOT "a small dark gray spinning gear below the Apple logo”? After you ‘forced a restart’ - the installer completed the installation? If so: What caused the Installer to ‘freeze’? ------- The primary system initialization stages in OS X are: Each primary stage of system initialization can be indicated by the following: firmware, startup chime or bright flash of the power-on light, followed by a light gray screen on the primary display; booter, a dark gray Apple logo on the primary display; kernel, a small dark gray spinning gear or spinning earth icon below the Apple logo; and system launchd, a white screen on all displays followed by the login screen. If you saw "a small dark gray spinning gear or spinning earth icon below the Apple logo" the ‘Restart’ hung at kernel just before system launchd The kernel provides the system’s foundation and loads additional drivers and the core BSD UNIX system. It is indicated by a dark gray spinning gear below the Apple logo on the main display. The system launchd process is ultimately responsible for starting every system process. It also manages system initialization and starts the loginwindow process. During system initialization, the system launchd process automatically starts /System/ Library/LaunchDaemons, / Library/LaunchDaemons, /Library/StartupItems (via SystemStarter), and the /etc/rc.local UNIX script if it exists. So, I am no clearer to understanding what went wrong with your Installation Process. Was it the Installer - (you only saw “a small dark gray spinning gear”) ? or Was it The Kernel - ( you saw "a small dark gray spinning gear or spinning earth icon below the Apple logo” ?
