Hi Ronni The installation stalled at the end of the restart and never got to the Login and Diagnostics window.
On the screen there was a “box” with the word restarting and the usual progress bar which was at the right hand end. The spinning gear was below this. There was no Apple logo. Installation was completed after forced restart, I have no idea what caused the installer to freeze The Macbook Air is only used for a very limited number of programs and has not had any third party system software modifications installed. I am more interested in your thoughts on coping with such a freeze and whether you have any suggestions on a course of action other than shutting down by means of the power? I have always been loathe to shut down by turning off the power. Thanks for your interest I will let you know if there are any any other odd occurrences with the MacBook Air but I don’t think it necessary to chase this down any further. My next task is to update the iMac so keep your fingers crossed for me. I will, of course, repair permissions, back up etc prior to this.
