Hi John With no idea of why it might solve your problem, I suggest a complete reset of (one of) your iPads.
I am about to do a complete system reset for my iMac: NBN device, modem, Time Capsule and iMac. I’ve been getting some very strange operations in El Capitan recently (triggered by the latest iWork update?). Simple shut down of the iMac clears the problems for a while, then they re-appear. Really waiting for OSX 10.11.2. Then, of course, a call to WAMUG!
