Tony,

I just tried PS (v13) and opened a blank new file.  It saved to the desktop 
automatically.  I also opened an existing PSD file and then did “save as”  and 
the file ended up in the folder it was originally stored in. ( this could be an 
issue if you do not know where the storage folder resides?

For safety I ALWAYS save new pics either off my iPhone or my Nikon D300 in a 
folder called “D300”.  I then make backups in two ways.  
1. to an ext hard drive labelled D70/D300  and 
2. my Timemachine regular backups.  
I also use another house computer to store results of other shoots relevant to 
the user of the other computer.
