Hi Jewels. In answer to your question. I am still with Telstra so I still have the @bigpond.com email address. But over time almost all my contacts now use my @mac.com address. I figure now that anyone who still uses my @bigpond email is not very close to me any more. And thank you Daniel for that info. It explains why I could not get @mac.com to work for my step-daughter and grand kids. They could only get @icloud.com. Regards, Stephen Chape Mac by choice Windows because my employer knew no better

They did actually have this information on their website before the move (in September 2023) as I was aware of it way back when it was first announced - as I’d advised some clients that if they ever left iinet for their internet, then there could be a chance that the @iinet address (or @westnet, or @tpg, or @internode addresses could be “revoked” (given TPG own all of them. The link to the info was on the iinet webpage here - https://help.iinet.net.au/iinet-email-messaging-company Mostly parts 5) , 6) , 7) and 8) - all refer to them owning the domain and them cancelling it if you cancel your iinet internet. In theory it could be a bit of a “grey area” as you’re paying someone else (TMC) for the email address (owned by iinet),..so they (TMC) may allow you to keep using it. In the day, iinet (when they had email and internet before it going to TMC) were actually one of the few companies who if you left them (took your internet to someone else) actually let you allow to pay a yearly fee ($25) to allow you the use of your email address. Most other ISP’s (eg Bigpond) stopped access of your email once you left them and took your internet elsewhere. A lot of ISP’s are stopping email. Bigpond now if you sign up with them for internet no longer offer new customers a @bigpond address. Iinet got rid of them email (and TPG who own them and all the ISPs under them “umbrella”. AussieBroadband are no longer doing email address anymore (as of 15th Dec) - if you had one, you can keep it, but if you hadn’t created one before this date, or sign up as a new customer now,..they no longer offer an @aussiebb.com.au email address. So a lot of the ISPs are getting out of the email business. They don’t want to do it anymore. Too costly, too much data, too much storage,…not enough “profit” for them I would imagine. Hence why a lot of people have gone from an “ISP owned email” address (eg @iinet, @bigpond etc) to either a) a free email address (@iCloud.com, @gmail.com etc) or b) a hosted domain address (eg .com.au <http://com.au/>, .com, .au, .id.au <http://id.au/> etc). It’s actually worthwhile having a secondary email address anyway,…as there is still a risk of “losing” an ISP address at some point. I’ve seen it happen to other ISPs announce they “may” consider shutting down email in the future. So if you’ve spent a year slowly going through advising all the “main contacts” and hoping you dont miss someone over a year or two of changing,…much easier to do that way then given “oh, you have 3 months before we close it off”. So I’ve had a few clients take 1-2 years of changing away from an @iinet address and moving their email to something else (either free or domain hosted). Re the Spam. Yes,..there seems to be a web hosted Spam folder they have, that doesn’t seem to follow true IMAP paths. As I have advised clients the same. Even if you set up the email address as IMAP, it doesn’t seem to “Map” that one Spam folder they have. So it doesnt seem set up correctly to me at their end. As under IMAP, it should map each folder - eg Inbox goes to Inbox, Sent goes to Sent, Trash goes to Trash, Spam goes to Junk etc. But they (TMC) have this one “Weird” Spam folder not mapping correctly. Because you can look in your IMAP spam folder and it’s Empty but like you say, log in to Webmail and their (TMC) spam folder has stuff in it. For Apple Mail, you may not have the folders showing under “Favourites” so you see them. In Apple Mail on your folder list on the left hand side is “Favourites” at the top. Under that normally will be All Inboxes, Sent (etc). Just to the right of the word “Favourites” if you roll your mouse to the right of that text, you’ll see a little “+” show up. (It’s invisible otherwise). Once you see the “+” click on and a pop up window shows. - then under “Add Favourite” and beside Mailbox to add, you can then choose “All Junk” - and repeat for “All Trashes” etc. they are normally the ones to add. Re the “Wrong Spam” - if you have it set up and are using IMAP, you can sometimes adjust the Mailbox behaviour to chose the “other’ Spam folder. But in some cases, it won’t give you that option, as as mentioned above it doesn’t appear to map correctly for IMAP - either they (TMC) have it set wrong, or there is a wrong setting their end. Yes, been doing MacWizardry for over 24 years now (since May 2001) and grown up with Apple since 1984,…so been doing them for a while. I live in Huntingdale, but I travel all over Perth seeing clients. (As far as Joondalup, Mandurah/Rockingham and all over the place) - as I’m a mobile consultant. Hope the above all helps. When iinet gave us the contact of TMC, they should have made this clear, but assume we didn’t have a choice if we wanted to keep our email address. I’ve been with iinet since the 1990’s and would be impossible to change my email address considering the number of people both work and personal have it. So guess I’m stuck with it. Today for me was important I receive my messages - one being a house I just sold and the other on an insurance claim matter. I’ve learnt that a number of emails instantly go to spam on the TMC web server and do not download to my computer. I have recently upgraded to Sequoia and the ’spam’ folder is not present in Mail anymore. How do I get around this ? Do I make a mailbox called Spam and then the Spam received on the web server would downloaded to it ? I have also made these emails as important and move to the mail box, but they continue to end up in spam on TMC website. I am at a loss on that one to be honest. Hope you can help me out on the Spam problem - sounds like you have an abundance of experience. Where is MacWizardry ? (The Messaging Company) However, you can’t take that email address with you - as they (TMC) “own it”. So if you go somewhere else, you will lose that email address and have to get a new one. You can’t take the @iinet address with you. So if you need to keep the same address, your only choice is to stay with TMC unfortunately. It’s not like having a domain address (ie like my email) that you can take that with you anywhere. Some clients have just gone with “free” email addresses (eg @outlook.com or @gmail.com or @iCloud.com), other clients I’ve set new hosting for them through my hosting business, so they have their own domain and email addresses that they can keep for long as they like. (Obviously costs, as it gets renewed each year). But it gives them their own domain name, and different email addresses that they want. What some clients did was set up their new email address (either free or hosted), then over a year they worked through to migrate people over to it. Once 99% of their email was on their new email address and they were confident with it, then they could then choose to close off the TMC email address. One of the advantages of owning a domain is I’m in control of it for as long as I want to keep it. (Though obviously pay for it of course). So unfortunately they are you only choices. But to keep it (as they own the @iinet address) your only choice is to stay with them. If spinning wheel logging into webmail then that could be other issues possibly as well. Though, they sometimes can be a bit slow to get into webmail, but overall when I’ve logged in for clients it generally hasn’t been too bad. Can anyone suggest a good reliable email service. It is important that I retain my email address for obvious reasons. Often very important emails end up in the spam box on the web server, but to log in to the server is almost impossible with the spinning wheel. Wishing you all Christmas season greetings.
