As I believe Joseph has mentioned earlier, it may simply be a matter of 
installation order. Almost all USB hardware I've installed recently is adamant 
about installing the software/drivers _first_, then plugging in the device. If 
the device was plugged in when you ran the XP upgrade, or while installing the 
drivers, it may not be recognized (HP and Lexmark All-In-One printers are 
notorious for this). Try physically disconnecting the device, then go into 
Add/Remove and remove any software which might have been installed, then go 
into Device Manager and remove the device itself from the list. Reboot, then 
install the software from the media, or copy the install to your HD and install 
from there. Then (I had to do this to get a JumpDrive recognized) shut down the 
system, plug in the reader, and restart the system. If all goes well XP should 
recognize the drive on startup and show a dialog saying "Installing software 
for your new hardware." Good luck!
