I wasn't planning to go to XP but found when I loaded W2000 from my original CD that the service packs are no longer available!

That's what forced my hand - and bled $270 from my bank account for the upgrade pack!

Oops.

Best thing to do to avoid this situation in the future is to download all the relevant service packs now, then either burn them to a DVD or stick them on your server. That way you don't have to worry about this any more (or spend time downloading everything again when you rebuild a machine).

I am getting messages half way through the installation that says the software isn't digitally signed and then it aborts the installation!

Are you clicking "Continue anyway" at that prompt (IIRC it's the button on the left)? It's not the default option, Windows will try pretty hard to stop you installing hardware if the manufacturer hasn't had it certified.
