Mmmmm. That's a thought Galatek Webmaster - but
now I have over half my software reinstalled I
don't feel inclined to go back to square one yet
again! I may have to of course if I run into any
more problems. Seattle Gremlins certainly do get into these things.
Isn't it a pity Bill and Co. don't spend a year
or two fixing all these bugs instead of
constantly adding unwanted extra features that
90% of us probably never find and wouldn't know
what to do with if we did? Then of course they
stop supporting systems after some years. I
wasn't planning to go to XP but found when I
re-loaded W2000 from my original CD that the
service packs are no longer available! That's
what forced my hand - and bled $270 from my bank account for the upgrade pack!
Anyway, since putting out my cry for help I've
tried connecting the camera direct and that works
fine so at least I can take the pics off the card and clean it for re-use.
As for reloading the USB Hub driver - there isn't
one. I'm connecting via the built-in ports on my
motherboard - I've got four rear and two front so
plenty to choose from! (None works for this
though - I've even swapped around peripherals
that are working so I know I am using a "live" port and still nothing!
Thanks to all for suggestions - I'll keep
tinkering around until I find the problem but at
today's prices it may be cheaper to just buy a new one!

Peter MacGregor

Did you install XP over 2K? Sometimes older
drivers remain setup for the old OS even when
trying to reinstall them on the new OS - the
best way I have found is to install the new OS
on a clean drive and install the hardware from
that point. Usualliy that works just great for
me - of course it is an MS OS so the little
gremlins will do what they can to disrupt
operations and end all life as we know it.
also - have you tried re-installing the USB Hub driver or updating it?

Peter,
Another thought. I've just had my Dell tech on
the phone (not too much charge and 30 day
follow up - that's good service) telling me off
for putting too much on the computer ;-). But
he said don't install straight from the disc,
put it on a hard drive first and then install
it. If that is possible it might be worth a try.

Thanks Joseph - I'll try anything at this stage!
Almost getting to the stage where it's cheaper to
go buy another card reader - but I object to
throwing away something that is only about a year
old and probably hasn't read more than 250 or so photos in its lifetime!
Plug and Play? More like Plug and Tear your hair
out in my experience. Just spent 30 minutes
reinstalling my scanner - supposed to be a two minute job they say!!

Peter,
I'm very non-technical as you well know, but I
take it you have tried installing the driver
first? Also I had a weird problem installing a
program after having to re-install Xp and what
I think solved it was running sfc /scannow to
find what had happened to or about irst.dll. I
was able to install other programs, but not this one!
If this helps I am delighted.

I've upgraded from W2000 to Windows XP in the
last week and no matter what I do I cannot
get it to recognise my Media Card Reader and
as a result can't transfer photos to my PC!
Bit of a problem as I've taken a load for a client for a new web site!
I've a Fuji Film reader that was working fine
with W2000 and the software says it's XP
ready. I've tried installing it and
uninstalling it - changed USB ports and
anything else I can think of including
downloading a software upgrade from the Fuji
site - which then tells me the software isn't
installed so the upgrade is no use!!
Windows Explorer shows my system as having the following drives:
C: - the basic partition on the HD
D: - (CD/DVD Drive)
E - a partition on the HD
F - my USB Removable "Memory Stick"
and then H - a separate HD I have installed.
All this is as per the previous setup except
that G (now missing) was the card reader and now won't show!
The system has told me "New Hardware found"
when I've reconnected it after removal, yet
even after running the setup CD that came with it, it still doesn't show?
Any of you highly technical people able to shed any light for me please?
Thanks
Peter MacGregor
