Is there a particular reason why you want to use javascript for your
slideshow? Would the method used here:

work for your project? I think this is a very clever use of <a name=?> and
white space. The first time I clicked on one of the forward/back carrots I
was astounded at how quickly the next "page" "loaded". After I dug a little
I realized that the images were all loaded while I was reading and in fact
there wasn't any new page loaded at all.
Re: load time for the images in this example, you'd be preloading the
javascript array anyway, right? So the time would be similar.
