applet that would crash my system. Folks who put JAVA stuff on their home
page are extremely thoughtless and arrogant. Since JAVA applets are not
universally "safe" for all browsers and all computers, such stuff should be
put on an "inside" page, with links that invite the surfer to leap into the
JAVA page, if that's their cup of tea.
I use a Shockwave piece on my site, but I don't put it on the home page.
And I provide a link to the Macromedia page so that they can get the plugin
if they want it. And even if they don't have the plugin, it won't crash
their system.
I also use Javascript, but I'm careful to put in a filter that assures that
no one will get an error message if their browser is not capable of
handling Javascript.
I feel the same way about DHTML, stylesheets and all such cutting-edge
stuff that isn't universally acceptable to all surfers. Such things should
go on an "inside" page.
I don't see any responsible commercial sites using such gimmicks as JAVA
applets and DHTML. It's usually developers who want to show off their
capabilities. And that's fine as long as I know what to expect so I won't
get into trouble viewing their sites. Commercial sites that have a serious
purpose to deliver information or sell a product don't waylay unsuspecting
surfers with such effects.
I'm sure mine is not the only computer that crashed upon visiting that
site. And there's no reason why I should have to go to great lengths to
fine-tune my system to accommodate developers who want to experiment with
such things. According to you, my Aunt Sally has no right to surf the Web
if she doesn't hire someone to come in and tune up her computer so that no
Web pages will cause her system to crash.
Cordially,
