I've been avoiding this discussion (since I have a server and a
connection, these "where do I host" posts usually get nuked to save
time), but I did happen to read this particular post about MPC.
I'm curious as to what this particular line meant. I do have a friend
looking for true unlimited bandwidth. He does very nice 3-D landscapes
and renderings (http://www.digitalblasphemy.com). He's really good about
using thumbnails and compressing the heck out of his pics, but his work
is popular and he's doing about 6 gigs a day in transfers.
He's on "Unlimited bandwidth" host #24 and the list is growing. I
didn't realize how much outright false advertising host services were
doing until I saw him moving his site every four days :p At present, if
you happen to surf it and note the locations, you can see it's hosted at
about half a dozen or more places, with the actual pictures spread out
across another half-dozen free places around the net.
He NEEDS a permanent home long enough to keep the site going for three or
four months so he can stabilize it and start working on his CD-ROM
version. After that's done and out (6 months), he could afford more
'realistic' service when he has a product to sell.
Thus, my question in re the quote above, what the heck qualifies for
"other kinds of sites"? It seems to suggest "anyone gets unlimited
bandwiwdth unless you use too much bandwidth, then you're an "other kind
of site"."
Thus, I'm hoping maybe the original poster might expand on that from
experience with MPC. And perhaps some of you might otherwise know of an
"unlimited" bandwidth service that means what they advertise?
(Yes, I know people should expect to pay for bandwidth when they do 6
gigs a day in transfers ;) He does too . . . but when the sign says
"unlimited", and our dictionaries both say "unlimited: having no limits,
bounds or qualifications", we have this feeling they ought to offer what
they advertise ).
