I can't speak on small websites since I work for a company which handles
one large website for one of the slowest paying clients in the world, the
U.S. Congress.
But in my previous life I was an attorney who represented only small
moving companies, which I consider analogous. These usually had no large
matters to take care of but a lot of little things. Every once in a while
there was a large lawsuit which is analogous to suddenly going to a large
website. But I made a nice living off of a lot of nickel and dime stuff
and they were small businessmen liking me because I was the parallel in
the legal business.
But I learned one lesson early on. We all know about it if we're not a big
business. Cash flow can kill you. Your small clients experience it and
then it goes on to you. I overcame it by having them pay 75% of what the
job was estimated to cost up front except for those with a proven trial
record of prompt payment who I still consider like gods. That way you
don't get burned and you can fill your stomach enough to concentrate on
getting both the start and end tags in.:)
