ACT II: SHOOT, THAT WAS FUN
(in which i meet the 90's incarnation of the abject computer nerd)
okay, he last post was downer, so now i want to brighten things up a
bit. fortunately, i have exactly the thing to do that: a
play-by-play of one computer geek interviewing another.
i'd been told by my boss that we'd be doing an interview with a
prospective candidate, but at the time i was trying to write a code
library for use in one of the projects. i sort of grunted,
immediately shunted the information to 'not immediately relevant'
memory, and forgot about it until friday at 4:00 pm, when this guy
walks into my fishtank.
(for those of you who didn't visit the collection of 'where i work'
photos, my office has glass walls on two sides, so i call it 'the
fishtank')
i stared at him blankly for a few seconds, for several good reasons.
first, i'd been writing code, so most of my human-interaction behavior
was in standby mode. second, i'd remebered the fact of the interview
being scheduled, but none of the associated contextual information
(what his name was, what job he was applying for, why i was supposed
to be talking to him) had surfaced yet. third, the guy was dressed
in one of the most perfect examples of a fin de seicle geek suit i've
ever seen..
starting from the top and working down:
- mildly unkempt hair
- frameless glasses (the horn-rims-with-tape look is out)
- yellow and brown check jacket
- painted tie, featuring pinks and blues
- light blue shirt
- forest-green courduroy (or possibly velour) slacks
- 3" of dark sock showing below the hem of the pants
- red-brown penny loafers.
infintely hip, compared to the polyester clone look normally
associated with the pocket-protector brigade, but still capable of
throwing an Armani designer into convulsions.
from the opposing POV, he was seeing my standard look:
- coiffure a la Einstein
- three days of stubble
- headphones around neck
- black tee shirt (Mettalica '96 stage crew)
- black sweats
- combat boots (black)
- sitting half-lotus in an office chair, typing
fifteen minutes later, by the time my boss arrived, we were deep in a
discussion of the relative merits of PHP and perl. i was
demonstrating OO some basic OOPerl syntax, and he was talking about
some nuances of compiling the PHP module into Apache.
i think we're going to hire him.. ;-)
mike stone <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 'net geek..
been there, done that, have network, will travel.
