Sadly, I've been fired from several jobs because I insisted on planning and
scheduling. Bosses seem to hate it when you take a logical, systematic
approach to getting work done.
It's pretty disheartening to be hired as a senior art director or creative
director, only to be fired for trying to get the department to function
smoothly. In one job, the ad agency CEO fired me after I made a production
schedule listing all upcoming jobs and new business-related speculative
work for the next couple of weeks. Then, when I saw a couple of impossible
heavy work days coming up, I suggested that we reserve time with a good
freelancer to help us over the crunch. I should have known better, since
the same ad agency usually called me in the mornings desperate for me to
come in and work the same day.
I've also met resistance from clients who don't want to plan their graphics
needs in advance. Though most of them advertise in the same magazine issues
or go to the same trade shows every year, they always wait til the last
minute, then start crying about how they need this or that yesterday.
My experiences led me to believe that employers want crisis management, not
crisis prevention. That's one kind of excitement I can live without.
