Just curious what some of you might thinkg of the following:
When a publisher evaluates a book, do they ask to see the cover of
the book first? From what I understand most books are judged by
content. And they are judged by people who read. Imagine a book
judged by someone who doesn't read.
What about a website? Are websites used as books are read?
Are websites created by web developers as books are published by
publishers?
Just as I would not ask an illiterate to evaluate a book, I would not
ask someone who doesn't use the web to evaluate a website. I
would not ask someone who can use software to design my
website; I would ask a designer. It is a lot easier to teach the web
to a designer than to teach design to someone with the money to
buy software.
Learning is important. It is not something money can buy. It is not
something done once and then forgotten. Learning is continuous,
especially so in the dynamic world of the internet.
I am the member of a few mailing lists. I get well over 200 emails a
day and I may peruse half of them. The authors of these emails
are webmasters, designers, programmers, and just about anyone
else with an interest in the web. We discuss what can be done,
what has been done, how to do it and how not to do it and why not.
Although not rocket science, the web can be a tricky place. It is
very easy to create a beautiful looking website that may only be
viewable by 50% of the market -- and you many never realize that.
Now if you go into production knowing that, then fine. But many
people do this in complete ignorance.
Do you ask yourself if you are creating a cover to dazzle or content
to browse. Will people come to your website, look, appreciate or
not, and move on, or will they come, browse, bookmark and come
back? Will you want them to come back? Will you be satisfied
with just one visit per person? Will you use java that is compatible
with netscape 2.0 or IE 3.0 or with netscape 2.0 on the MAC or will
you require all visitors to have properly configured computers using
56K Flex, 64 meg of ram, with at least 10 meg of free disk space
and a 21 inch monitor set at 1200x768 resolution and 16 million
colors and using windows98 and netscape 4.0345? These things
and much more must, no -not must, could be considered.
