I use windowsNT and linux.  As I build my own computers (just 
snap them together) I always have spare parts that I sometimes 
snap together to create a new monster.

I would suggest that route. Take an old 486 or whatever and install 
linux on it. I bought a couple of cheap network cards and a hub for 
under US$100 (and for just 2 you don't need the hub but I don't 
know that route). And then boom you have your intranet or 
whatever.  I don't see it as one or the other; more more one than 
the other.
