I think it's funny how so many of the smaller firms, which started their
businesses as alternatives to the "big corporate machine" end up wanting to
be part of the machine. Personally, as far as agregators are concerned, I'd
rather stay small, keep control and have more fun. Been in a cubby hole. No
more, por favor. Thou shalt not be aggregated.
Now, something about this "aggregator" thread made me think about the idea
of doing projects and getting a percentage of the success. Do 5 sites in a
year, then 5 the next, get a percentage off of the successful ones, go to
the mailbox, collect regular stream of $. I have been approached by 2 or 3
people asking me to partner with them on projects. All of these ideas have,
after closer examination, meant "I thought up the general idea, now you do
all the work", so I've passed on them all. However, inevitably someone will
come along with a good idea, a marketing plan and some $ to spend. In lieu
of "partnering" with them, which could steal all my time from me, mess up my
other customers and put too many eggs in one basket, I've been pondering
some sort of ongoing "pseudo partnership" agreement, where I would get a cut
of profits, but still be able to bring in new work (and therefore enjoy more
variety).
I'm referring not just to a "do the site and you'll get 5% of all sales
afterwards" kind of thing, but rather an ongoing relationship where I would
be working behind the scenes to add features to the site while profiting
(and my profits may change according to XYZ).
Anyone doing this...or anyone want to pass on some thoughts, including
references for writing "partnership" agreements?
TIA,
Jack
