I think we must differentiate between high end Web shops and ad agencies.
There are some high end Web shops that do fine work. And there are lots
more ad agencies who are just coming to the Web party, probably most within
the last year or so. I suspect ignorance on the part of the ad agency is
just as much to blame as client ignorance. How the heck is an ad agency
creative going to learn in a year what we've been spending the last four
years on? Same with most graphic designers--I can't imagine there's a large
pool of Web savvy high end creative talent for ad agencies to hire from.
Also, consider that most ad agencies are likely to have account
representatives out in the field who haven't a shred of experience with Web
design and could no more explain bandwidth issues to a client than I could
fly to the moon. In many, if not most, ad agencies, creatives never come
into face to face contact with clients. It's difficult enough trying to
explain Web stuff to clients face to face -- imagine trying to do it
through an account executive.
