     Not always.  I've been the last one out the door a number of times,
lasted through various layoffs, etc.  My secret?  Well, aside from knowing
my stuff, I wear a suit and tie all the time.  You look like a
professional, act like a professional, and you get treated like a
professional.  The key is to get your boss to feel he or she can rely on
you. Image counts, think of it as trying to make yourself an icon in
your manager's mind; but you need to know your stuff too.

     And after they find they (oops!) got rid of all the guys who could
keep sand out of their shoes in the first place... they end up hiring more
consultants.  Happens over and over again.
