Yeah, newsgroups are still quite a useful resource, though grossly
spammified as others have noted. I began on the Internet in about 1991
with a Fido > NNTP gateway application via my local BBS back then,
actually.

I usually use NewsFerret to help me dredge through all the dreck in
newsgroups when I'm looking for specific info on a product or topic; just
indicate which groups you want to check, enter some keywords, and let it
search away in the background. Much quicker and tidier than firing up my
news client (Agent), which I hardly ever do anymore.

Speaking of companies I'll never deal with again: I've had a very
frustrating time with Supra/Diamond regarding a 56k modem I bought
several months ago.

At the time (early May) the modem packaging (and the Business Depot
sales clerk) assured me that it was v.90-enabled, which was a priority for
me. Upon buying and installing it, I discovered to my considerable
annoyance that it was "v.90-READY", not enabled, and that I would have
to wait for a flash ROM upgrade to be released. In the meantime it was
K56flex only.

Anyway, it's now August, there is still no v.90 upgrade available for my
particular model, and my five e-mails and three phone calls to Diamond
down in California have so far been completely ignored. If I hadn't lost my
(expletive deleted) receipt I would just take it back to the retailer and
demand a refund, but in the meantime I seem to be beat. Frustrating. I
would *not* recommend Supra/Diamond for their customer service
policies, or lack thereof.
