Usenet is indeed one of the great victims of the popularization of the net.
But it's still quite useable.
Post your gripe about a company to a usenet group.
Others who are really interested will be able to find your email by
searching www.dejanews.com . That's an archived searcher for usenet. Very
cool tool.
For example, whenever I start a new contract, I search www.dejanews.com and
check out the company. Major flame wars, unhappy ex-employees, comments,
etc. I can also check potential co-workers or job candidates: are they
posting absurd flames, etc. You can read hands-on reviews about products
from their users.
Usenet is like a giant archive of faq's and useful explanations. One of my
houseplants, a ficus (a tree-like thing) was losing leaves. No problem.
Search dejanews for "ficus" and sure enough, someone has asked "Why is my
ficus losing leaves?" and someone has answered.
With over 30,000 newsgroups, everything has been covered.
