Suzanne,

I just took a look at your slide show using both NC4 and IE4.
The slide show works fine in NC, but line 16, Char 3 generates
a "No such interface supported" error message in IE 4. That
would be the line containing:

mapWindow = window.open('frametest2.html', ...

Thanks for everyone's comments, btw, regarding the dhtml
I've been playing around with. I haven't included any metatags
for search engines yet because the site is a ways off from
going public. I also agree that the "gimics" are a bit on the
overboard side: they bother me just as much as some of you.
I like the idea of using dhtml for more efficient purposes, such
as Peter's idea of updating a page without reloading the entire
page. Given the still current state of the net and the need for
backwards compatibility, I think most of you are right
regarding my targeted audience's ability to access a
page heavily loaded with dhtml. I do like the layers
concept though, especially its support for absolute positioning.
Not sure if I'd opt for the access restrictions now though.

Also, about Peter's updating idea. Without reloading an entire
page, there is just no way to update a page's information
using just javascript. The only way to do it is using dhtml
(and again) geared toward IE. I know MS is moving more
in this direction and that its 5.0 browser will allow for more
manipulation of dhtml database content. Not sure what
Netscape is doing. And of course, there's that other
problem when using browsers like the good old text-only
linx. Guess the matter just boils down to what you wish
to do, how to accomplish it, and tailoring it to your
audience. On the other hand, like Peter's intranet,
the possibility exists that you could tailor your
audience to your wares. In Peter's case, that would
mean software and perhaps hardware configurations
on a corporate level. In my case, like the "kamera
obscura" as some of my colleagues have come to
know it, fitting the "mind's eye" <g> seems the
better, albeit less-conventional avenue. And in all
cases, the trade-off would seem compromise:
generating a very large file suitably compatible with
most browser versions (or a small file, lacking the
latest in presentation techniques).

Communication is indeed a wonderous thing. Now if I
could just easily back out of Eudora 4.0 to my previous
3.0, I might just get my email line formatting right. <g>

Jan Cohen, in learning mode.
