Unfortunately, even in a city as wired as Phoenix, to the majority of
secretaries, receptionists, data entry, etc. people (and even most
managers and administrators), it IS "techie stuff". When I do things
that are, to me, common everyday procedures, they act like I'm some
kind of "wizard" or something! Basic concepts like saving a document
to a floppy, creating a new directory/folder and saving something there,
what's in memory vs what's on the hard disk are as foreign to them as
understanding quantum physics would be to a grade schooler (I know,
there are some grade schoolers that probably understand quantum
physics, but I'm sure they are the exception.) The point is, most workers
are only interested in knowing just enough to do *their* job and keep
from getting fired -- nothing more! I'm afraid it may even get worse
before getting better. In a recent poll (for what they're worth), only 3.5%
of graduating HS students were planning on computer studies upon
entering college. Most HS students I've run into are only interested in
learning the latest game or chatting on the Internet. They could care
less about learning how to use the computer as a "tool"!
