Welcome, Cherise! (Side personal request to you and others: please

I recently participated in an "externship" program. Two HS teachers
came to my office for a day, watched what I do (as well as what and how
the graphic designers work), and asked questions about what skills and
capabilities would be necessary for their students to have in order to
work in a graphic design and website development company. They were
required to report back to the group of teachers who had gone to other
businesses, so that all participating would have the benefit of each
others' experiences.
What I mostly tried to convey was that computers are a tool that we
currently use to create graphics and websites and marketing
communications materials (the parent company of my division is a trade
show exhibit and graphics firm - the advertising agency and website
development divisions are adjuncts to offer a full range of marcomm to
our clients). So while it is crucial for students to learn the basics
of the software available, it is even MORE crucial for them to
understand the basics of graphic design and marketing communications,
because the TOOLS change but the purpose does not. (I also told them
about my ex-boyfriend, the airbrush retoucher. About the best with an
airbrush around, out of business when Photoshop got good. That story
seemed to put it all in perspective for them <g>.)
