"Rights of ownership" for the work done should be outlined in a contract.

Just tell them you did it. If they don't trust you the relationship probably
won't go anywhere anyway.

It has been for me. I've probably placed a "credit" on 1/3rd of the sites
I've done. It depends on the client. I can understand a client that wants
the world to think that the site was created in-house. Actually, I've been
busy for nearly 2 years just from referrals...and without an online
portfolio. I think the lessons learned from doing the work far outwiegh
getting persnickity about a "credit line" at the bottom of a site you create
for someone else.

It's a nice addition and usually the client won't care that much about it.
It may also lead to your sites showing up in search engines when someone
searches for your name or business name. Again, though, I wouldn't push it
if it's a hard line issue and you really want to work with the client. One
question to ask yourself, though, is "will this guy give me a reference?" If
you think that he'll lie about who did the site, then maintain your position
, clearly define rights in a contract and/or search for someone else to do
work for.
