Don't compromise.  Take the hard line stance.  You may lose that particular
job, but you may end up getting it along with increased respect from your
client.  I had a similar situation occur a couple of months ago.  When I was
offered a *badly* needed job, but with conditions I considered unacceptable,
I wrote back a rejection letter outlining my objections and listing my
requirements along with my reasoning as to why my requirements were
non-negotiable.  The company wrote back not only agreeing to my terms,
but added a few additional benefits I hadn't asked for.  They said that after
reading the letter, they realized that they *really* wanted me to do the work
and added the extras to emphasize the point.  It could have easily gone the
other way with them turning me down, but as it turned out, we both felt much
better afterwards.
