The sites I manage fit into several categories, but the obvious ones 
are:

Direct sales on the web - niche items
Traffic generators - advertising sales
Sales Aids - lead qualification and information gathering, primary 
intention is to turn people with an interest into qualified leads for 
high ticket services.

The traffic/ad site is only four months old and is not yet paying its 
own way, altho traffic is growing and I expect break even sometime 
early in 1999.  One of the direct sales sites does very well (I have a 
revenue sharing arrangement), another is really a hobby for its owner 
and suffers as a consequence.

One of the "qualifiers" is reported to be a key part of the sales 
process - their closing ratio is almost double for people who have gone 
to the website vs. those who haven't.  BTW most of the traffic for this 
site comes as a result of classified newspaper ads - less than 15% is 
from search engines and on-line links.
