I don't think it's a matter of desktops and eyeballs; I think it's
a matter of trying to keep the technology from destruction.
For example, in the early- to mid-80's, the Unix market fractured
as two main camps emerged: the AT&T lineage (v6, v7, system III, system V)
and the BSD lineage (BSD 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, etc.). The resulting confusion
kept many people from adopting what was (and is) superior technology
to anything else available, because they were concerned about
issues of compatibility and portability. It's my belief that Micro$oft
is trying to destroy Java because their own product, ActiveX, is far
too weak to compete with it on its own merits; therefore, they're
attempting to introduce as much NON-compatibility and NON-portability
as they possibly can, in direct violation of the licensing agreement
which they signed. They don't want market share for Java: they want to
cripple Java.
This is, IMHO, totally unethical behavior, but not in the least
surprising, given the source, and given their previous attempts
to suppress Java technology.
Knowing Gosling et.al.'s history, I'm sure they're furious.
And they should be. They've made a reasonable first-order attempt
to create portable software for the Internet, a significant step
forward in human progress, and then watched Micro$oft try to
destroy it, all for the sake of Bill Gates' monumental greed.
I hope Sun takes them for every last penny they've got.
