Barry, don't be so quick; you almost remind me of myself:)
I have started to work at an ad agency and lo and behold I have
become to appreciate how easy a wysiwyg html editor can be for some.
Our very capable designer uses some MAC product which really makes
his life easy (of course it doesn't help me much in the manual
editing department but it is much better than Front Page).
I have seen how Site Mill can do some nice work with a website (show
all links, test them, check spelling (but I haven't tried that) and
show you what files have changed since the last time you looked at
the site.
And of course we have the office manager who cannot put anything on
the intranet because "she doesn't know html". I have an inclination
for her to put everything into a database and forget about using any
sort of editor at all. Just establish some sort of templates for
the document types she creates and then choose document type and
publish. She can then polish in whatever editor she wants.
But most of these documents do not need to be super polished. They
are just things like how to use the phone, how to request a day off
or a pto etc. etc.
But then you have to wonder how she will put these on the intranet.
So many people have just no concept of a file system. The database
route would be best. I did a major site that does just this. The
data all goes in the database and the cgi creates directories as
needed and publishes the data from the database--it runs everything
through templates that designers can modify as necessary.
Has anyone worked with Filemaker? The local intranet is on an NT and
they have Filemaker. Perhaps I can do something with this.
