Feh. That's a pipe dream. If you are looking for politicians
to be role models, you are looking in the wrong place, because 99%
of them are as flawed as 99% of us. Looking for them to
have "a sense of values, a few virtues, and a strong decent
character" is as idiotic as looking for those qualities among,
say, professional athletes or movie stars. It's utterly pointless.
It's the pathetic quest of people without the spine to be their *own*
role models, who therefore feel the need to belittle someone else's
lifestyle instead of quietly living their own to the best of
their ability. It's the easy way out, which is why it's the choice
of cowards and demogogues everywhere.
Me? I don't care. I don't need them to be role models. That's not
why I vote for them. I want people who can get the job done, and
if they spend all their spare time drinking, smoking and screwing
(the title of a great little book of essays, by the way), hey, great,
fine, have a good time, whatever. That's their private life, and it's
none of my business or *yours*.
See, I have this rule.
The rule is that if I'm asked a question and the answer is none of
the questioner's business (and yes, I get to decide if that's the case),
then I'm free to (a) not answer it or (b) lie about it, without the
slighest tinge of guilt.
Frankly, that's what people who ask overly prying/personal questions
deserve. (They *certainly* don't deserve the truth.) I usually
choose a, because I prefer it; but sometimes, in the case of especially
annoying questions or questioners, I choose b.
Given that I run my life this way, I have no problem with the President
doing the same thing.
Of course he lied about the sex! *EVERYONE* lies about sex. Sheesh, the
way the press and Congress and the religious wackos are screaming
about it, you'd think this was some kind of astounding revelation.
Well......DUH!
(This is not to say, by the way, that I am giving him a free pass
on the possible financial shenanigans (Whitewater) or sexual harrassment
charges (Jones); I am making no comment on either at the moment, because
I don't think I have enough facts in front of me to make a cogent one.
But I'm watching and listening with considerable interest. When I think
I have enough information to form a substantiated opinion, I will: and
believe me, I'm not playing favorites. Y'all oughta know me well enough
by now that I'll rip *anybody* if I think I have good reason to.)
I find it astounding that just a few years ago, a man who
subverted the electoral process, waged an illegal war, and used
federal resources to target political enemies, was accorded
eulogies befitting an elder statesman...and now someone who
sits in the same office is getting ripped over a couple of blowjobs.
Somewhere, Richard M. Nixon is laughing his ass off.
