In computers, as in other industries, I think a lot of the blame should be
placed solidly on women themselves, for failing to get the kind of college
or vocational training they need to get the good jobs that traditionally go
to men. At least when I was in college, a high degree of emphasis was
placed on getting a good liberal arts education. IMHO a liberal arts degree
is rarely a ticket to getting a good job. My guess is that a woman with a
degree in some form of vocational training from a junior college is likely
to be better off in the job market than her female counterpart with a
liberal arts degree from a 4 year college. I bailed out of a very
prestigious 4 year liberal arts college when I realized that all I could do
with a degree from that school was teach, and then only if I went back to a
college in my own state for teaching certification.

Someone needs to advise young women to figure out what kind of jobs they
can get after graduation before they decide on their college majors. All I
was told back in the late '60s was that I had to get my teaching
certificate "to fall back on" (translation: in case my future husband dies
or leaves me). Fortunately I ignored that advice and transferred to an
excellent vocational school in NYC (F.I.T.). There are excellent vocational
training programs all over the US where great job training can be obtained
for a fraction of the cost of a traditional 4 year college program, and
where the subject matter can be more focused and a lot more interesting and
relevant. I just wish more people were aware of them.
