I don't use MetroX either, preferring to use the Free X86 server for
a variety of reasons -- including support for other video cards.
The free X server will also configure itself by probing your video
card -- which is exactly what I had it do.
A lot of the complexity that you've bumped into isn't due to Linux: it's
due to the wackiness of PC hardware, which I'm discovering comes in about
a bazillion varieties with a bazillion configuration options. I'm a *very*
experienced Unix person, and so far, every single problem I've run into
with Linux has to do with PC hardware. (The reason you don't see these
things with certain other OS's is that they have been hacked up to cope
with this. Of course, they *only* run on PC hardware, whereas Linux
also runs on Sparc, Alpha, PowerPC, etc....)
I use the command line almost exclusively, because I type very fast
and because I've yet to find a GUI that made life simpler for me
than just using the command line. One of things that I hope Linux
development continues to do is to provide both paths: you might be
more comfortable creating user accounts, changing network configuration
parameters, etc., using a GUI, while I'd like to do it via the command line.
With appropriate documentation, we can each achieve the same objective
by causing the same action to happen "behind the scenes"; I hope that such
documentation continues to be generated.
