Netscape loses more of browser market-study
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Netscape Communications Corp.
lost more share of the U.S. Internet browser market to
Microsoft
Corp. as of January, market research firm ZD Market
Intelligence
said Tuesday.
Although Netscape added new users, ZD Market Intelligence
said
that its total share of U.S. PCs using the Internet fell
to 54 percent in
January, from 63 percent a year ago.
Microsoft's Internet Explorer's share nearly doubled to
39 percent
from 21 percent in January 1997.
``Although Netscape did grow its number of users, the
clear winner
was Microsoft and its Internet Explorer,'' said David
Tremblay, a
senior analyst with ZD Market Intelligence, a unit of
Ziff-Davis Inc.,
said in a statement.
Including both Navigator and Communicator, a total of
24.2 million
PCs in the United States used a Netscape browser as of
January, a
33 percent increase from 18.2 million a year ago.
Microsoft's IE was
used in 17.3 million PCs as of January, an increase of
182 percent,
ZD Market Intelligence said.
